For capacities over 10,000 lbs., rail bracket fastening may require beam support as shown. A Structural Engineer needs to determine that the hoistway structure will withstand the rail forces shown on the layout drawing.

Notes:

  • Overhead dimensions are based on 6 foot high car gate.
  • Two section car gates are not recommended for high usage installations or wide openings.
  • For extra high door opening requirements, or special conditions, consult your representative.
Calculations based on EMS Gates and Doors
Minimum Overhead for Single Section Gates
  = 14'-6"
Minimum Overhead for Two Section Gates
  = 12'-4"
Clear Inside of Cab
  Width = Platform – 4"
Front Opening Only
Depth = Platform – 5" for Single Section Gate
  For Doors Exceeding 13'-6" in Width - 6 ½"
Depth = Platform – 7 ½" for Two Section Gate
For Doors Exceeding 13'-6" in Width - 9"
Front and Rear Opening
Depth = Platform – 6" for Single Section Gate
For Doors Exceeding 13'-6" in Width - 9"
Depth = Platform – 11" for Two Section Gate
For Doors Exceeding 13'-6" in Width - 14"

ASME A17.1 code requirements for minimum rated capacity are as follows:
Class A (General Freight Loading) – 50 lbs. per sq. ft.
Class B (Motor Vehicle Loading) – 30 lbs. per sq. ft.
Class C-1 (Industrial Truck Loading – truck carried by elevator) – 50 lbs. per sq. ft., but not less than load, including weight of truck.
Class C-2 (Industrial Truck Loading – truck is normally used for loading and unloading only, and is not usually carried by elevator) – for elevators of 20,000 lbs. capacity or less capacity shall equal the weight of the loaded truck – maximum load on platform during loading and unloading not exceed 150% of rated load.
Class C-3 (Other loading with heavy concentrations where truck is not usually used) – 50 lbs. per sq. ft., but not less than load.
NOTE: Square feet area of platform is determined by net inside area.

General Note:

1 lb. = 0.454 kg
1ft2 = 9.29 E-2m2

Notes:

  • Hoistway dimensions based on maximum car speed of 150 FPM. Consult your MEI representative for speeds exceeding 150 FPM.
  • Total Travel = Maximum travel of 90' – 115'. Based on capacity.
  • Pit depth and overhead clearance are in accordance with ANSI code requirements. Local codes may vary these requirements. A pit ladder (by others) is required.
  • ANSI code requires that hoistways of elevators shall be provided with means to prevent the accumulation of smoke and hot gases in case of fire as required by the building code.
  • A 115 VAC GFI outlet and lights are required in the pit, and separate 115 VAC circuit to the elevator controller (by others).
  • Hoistway walls must support anchor forces. Forces to be specified by MEI on elevator layout drawing based on specific design conditions.
  • Pit floor must be adequately reinforced to transmit jack, buffer, and safety setting forces. Forces to be specified by MEI on elevator layout drawing based on specific design conditions.
  • Only elevator related equipment allowed in hoistway or equipment room.
  • All elevators require heat/smoke sensors (by others) at each floor and associated elevator machine room with wires returned to elevator control panel in machine room. (Verify with local code.)
  • Duties shown will meet general demands of most hospitals and institutions. Local codes and governing agencies may require special sizes.
  • ANSI code requires a locked governor access door at top of hoistway. This door (by others) is maximum size of 24" x 24" and must be accessible within the building or from the roof. The governor access door needs the same fire rating as the hoistway walls.
